About this Blog

So you volunteered to help design and build the props for your marching and/or winterguard show and the band director has told you what props they would like built and you are not sure how to go about it!

This blog was created to get ideas, share ideas, and learn how to plan great DIY props for your marching band or winterguard show on a smallish budget. Most marching bands don't have a lot money so we have to make the most of every dollar. This guide shows what materials and methods I have found to be most effective.

This blog is a guided tour of a few years of Marching Band and Winterguard prop builds where you see the process from concept to completion with all of the twists and turns in the creative process. I try to describe in as much detail as possible the design and build process.

I hope you find something useful and become inspired! I do not claim to be any kind of an expert and there may be better ways to do things and I hope others will constructively share them!

So dig in, look at the examples and ask questions! Recommend links to good ideas!

There are many opinions about whether props add or take away from Marching Band shows. This is not the forum to debate this so I will not post any comments on this topic.

  1. Really good information John. I can tell from the pictures and narrative you were not only inspired by the creative demands of these project but many parents were also inspired and got involved. I expect this blog will become the blueprint for the development of props for many seasons in the future.

    Way to go!
